Thats Old Jack.

That's Old Jack.

Here is a picture of Jack; he was almost fourteen when the picture was taken. He transitioned to chasing ethereal cows on August 15, 2008. He was almost fifteen.
Jack and I enjoyed many desert and mountain hikes together. He was always “ready to go” and would wake me by standing over my sleeping bag and pawing me. Jack loved the snow and the springtime picture was taken when he sat his tummy down on the last patch of snow that he was able to find on a March day in 2007.
He was a good dog.
A corny but true poem is below:

In appreciation of a steadfast friend in the twilight of his life

Hey, old Jack

How is the wolf in you now?

Does he long for crisp mountain nights

Bathed in brilliant stars?

Does the spirit still stir in your soul?

Does the memory of alpine breeze

Suffused with scent of marmot, elk and ice

Urge you to stir those tired old bones just one more time?

Would you still howl at a waning moon?

Hey, old Jack

It’s autumn now

I remember those springtime mornings

Awakening to your hot breath on my cheek

You greeted me with predawn frost

Scent of adventure in the wind

Our days were not measured by time, light or name

But by footstep, breath and pounding pulse

By rests on a snowfield

Views from a knife-edged ridge

By scrambles down steep shale slopes

To reach camp at dusk

Hey, old Jack

We climbed many a mountain

Followed many a breeze

How is the wolf in you now?

How do those old bones feel?

You falter, stumble and stop

The mountain adventures are memories now

Still, here we are

The chill alpine air embraces us with scent and promise

The rising moon will be brilliant tonight

Hey, old Jack

There will be frost in the morning
