Another first for Durango this weekend – Suzanne Vega comes to town for a performance at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

Widely regarded as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been labeled contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known halls. In performances devoid of outward drama that nevertheless convey deep emotion, Vega sings in a distinctive, clear vibrato-less voice that has been described as “a cool, dry sandpaper- brushed near-whisper” and as “plaintive but disarmingly powerful.” Tickets available through the concert hall box office 247-7657, or online durangoconcerts.com.

Durango Acoustic Music has scored a date with The Derailers for their first local performance ever this Saturday at the Durango Arts Center. This Austin, Texas-based quintet has been united for 15 years by a passion for Buck Owens and the Beatles. In addition, their music celebrates the legacies of Buddy Holly, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and Charlie Rich while still maintaining the edge of today’s country music. The band includes a number of tempting elements; pedal steel, Dobro, keyboards, drums, acoustic & lead guitar, electric & acoustic bass. Doors open at 7:30 and the show gets going at 8pm. Come on out and give these Texas boys somethin’ to holler about during their first ever visit to Durango! Ticket outlets – Southwest Sound, Animas Trading Company and Canyon Music in Durango.
