Sweet Sunny South at the Hank Saturday night

Sweet Sunny South will perform a CD release party Saturday (5/1) at the Henry Strater Theatre in Durango.

This acoustic quartet plays a unique blend of new and traditional music, styles ranging from bluegrass, Cajun, oldtime to honky tonk.  Based in Paonia, Colorado, the group has performed extensively throughout the West for the past 9 years and continues to gain a reputation for a lively and entertaining stage show, as well as great songwriting.  Their new CD, Carried off by a Twister, is their fourth studio project, and is produced by Phil Wade of the Wilders.

Sweet Sunny South represents the traditional music of greats such as John Hartford and The Carter Family at the same time drawing influences from more contemporary bands.

Jones is no newcomer to the musical spotlight. His resume includes appearances and recordings with some of the world’s most respected musicians including The Chieftains (he was featured on their 2003 U.S. tour), Earl Scruggs, Vassar Clements, Lynn Morris Band, April Verch Band, the McCarters and the award-winning quartet Weary Hearts, among others. Most recently, he appeared in the PBS series “The Appalachians” as both a performer and commentator.

Chris Jones has been named Broadcaster Of The Year at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual awards for his work as a DJ on Sirius Satellite Radio’s bluegrass channel, Jones also took home a co-writer’s Song Of The Year trophy for “Fork In The Road,” the title track of an Album Of The Year winner by the Infamous Stringdusters. Jones will be broadcasting interviews and selected sets live from the 2010 Meltdown on satellite radio.

Durango Bluegrass Meltdown weekend is upon us – enjoy!

Check out this classic video clip of “The Outta Hand String Band” playing a sidewalk gig in front of Animas Trading during Meltdown 2005.

Since 1995, a volunteer group of local acoustic music devotees have been presenting The Durango Bluegrass Meltdown, an extraordinary and lovable little festival. The Meltdown features three unique, intimate main stages, a super jam, barn dance (Durango style), Saturday night Celtdown, and music flowing from bars, restaurants, coffee houses, and downtown streets and sidewalks – and don’t forget the workshops. The festival is based out of the historic Strater Hotel where jamming and merriment goes on into the wee hours of the morning.

This year’s lineup of national, regional and local bands includes: Audie Blaylock and Redline; Chris Jones and the Night Drivers; Town Mountain; Gold Heart; Riley Baugus with the Stuart Brothers; Finders and Youngberg; Blue Canyon Boys; Duke City Swampcoolers; Antero Junction; The Badly Bent; Wild Mountain; Bar D Wranglers; Waiting on Trial; Under the Radar; Blue Moon Ramblers; San Juan String Band; The Scrugglers; Jack Ten High; Colorado College Bluegrass Ensemble; Patrick Crossing; Giants Dance and Whistle Stop.

Everything you need to know is at durangomeltdown.com. Don’t miss Hugh Felt’s “The Grass is Bluer” on KSUT, Thursday evening for a preview from 8-10.

Get out there and enjoy, dance, attend a workshop, or play some live music!

KSUT bids a fond farewell to Ron Fundingsland

A beauty from the archives - Dianne Reeves visits with Ron at the KSUT studios.

After 15 years as our resident jazz aficionado, Ron Fundingsland is leaving KSUT to pursue other interests. Ron has shared his extensive knowledge of, and incredible ear for jazz through his popular weekly program  Straight Ahead. His made-for-radio voice has ushered listeners through All Things Considered and evening programming several nights a week. His appreciation and broad knowledge of music of all kinds have made his Afternoon Blends among our best.

Ron’s behind-the-airwaves work at KSUT has also made him a significant asset.   He established KSUT as a credible resource for new jazz within the closely knit industry, and, despite our small station size, is recognized as one of the premier  jazz directors in public radio.  Ron also managed the station’s public service announcements for several years, maintaining an online and on-air calendar in support of local non-profits.

While he is known to listeners for his on-air creativity, there is a visual side to his artistry that should not be missed.  Ron is a professional artist, one area he intends to return his focus to following his departure from KSUT. He creates intaglio prints and etchings in his studio in Bayfield. His remarkable work is represented in galleries and art museum collections around the country.

Ron will be greatly missed by staff and listeners alike.  We wish him the very best. Check out his work:www.ronfundingsland.com

The final broadcast of Straight Ahead will be Tuesday, April 13, 8-11 PM.
