We’re pretty thrilled to welcome the Turtle Island Quartet to the KSUT studios Wednesday (5/9) at 12:15 PM. They perform at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, Wednesday evening. The “Turtles” will be joined by Mike Marshall, one of the world’s most accomplished and versatile string instrumentalists.
Its name derived from Native American Folklore, the Turtle Island Quartet has been cited as a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings, and called the quintessential American string quartet of the 21st century. Winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy for Best Classical Crossover, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles. The repertoire consists of hundreds of ingenious arrangements and originals.
Mike Marshall has been a part of the new acoustic music scene since the early 1980s. He has performed and recorded with many musicians in a variety of styles, including bluegrass, classical, jazz and Brazilian music. In addition to several instruments within the mandolin family, Marshall also plays the guitar and violin.
Our old friend Chuck Pyle will be stopping by the KSUT studios for some live music and conversation with Jim Belcher on Friday morning at 11. Dubbed the ‘Zen Cowboy’ and Colorado’s Folk Music Laureate, his songs are inspired by the state’s lifestyle, landscape, history, and other western sensibilities. Chuck performs Friday night at the Henry Strater Theatre.

Three great musicians will join us for three separate in-studio performances on Thursday afternoon.
We’ll kick things off with Patty Larkin shortly after 1:00 PM. Patty celebrated 25 years in the recording industry in 2010 with her CD “25″ featuring love songs reworked and newly recorded with a host of musician friends. She’s performing Thursday and Friday night at the Millwood Junction in Mancos. A singer-songwriter and amazing guitarist, Patty remains a core artist of the KSUT Music Blend and we look forward to a great session.
Eric Bibb will join us shortly after 2:00 PM for some traditional live blues. Bibb was last here in 2010 on his “Booker’s Guitar” tour, paying homage to the Delta Blues of Booker White. This time, he’ll be performing at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College along with fellow bluesman Guy Davis on their “Blues Pilgrims” tour.
Guy Davis will be joining us as well at approximately 2:30 for his first in-studio performance on KSUT. Blues guitarist, banjo player and actor, Davis is about to release “The Adventures of Fishy Waters: In Bed with the Blues”, an audio play that combines Davis’ original songs with those of Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy and others. We look forward to some blues and storytelling to top off our afternoon of live guests.

Rob Rawls will be interviewing John Cater (chair) and Jessica Polatty (co-chair) of the Aztec Highland Games and Celtic Festival on Wednesday morning at 10:06, following BBC. Tune-in for an overview of this weekend’s events – featuring traditional athletic competitions, Celtic music, dancing and children’s activities.
On Friday afternoon at approx 1:15 (we’re depending on flights arriving on time), we’ll be joined by the Australian celtic rock band “BROTHER” for some live music and conversation. We’re psyched to have bagpipes and a digeridoo in the studio. You may have seen BROTHER on NBC’s ‘ER’, maybe heard their music on the classic ‘Baraka’ soundtrack or UPN’s ‘ Twilight Zone.’ The band has shared stages with Joe Walsh, John Entwhistle, Linkin Park, and Alicia Keys and are the only independent band to have played the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Fusing signature vocals and guitar with the deep pulse of the didgeridoo, the soaring highs of the bagpipes, and tribal percussion, BROTHER is wholly original. The band’s powerhouse live performances are an energetic celebration, captivating and engaging the audience from the first song to the last.
Angus, founding member of BROTHER, arrived in Los Angeles from Australia with his brothers a decade ago as little more than fresh-faced farm boys. In LA, they found themselves busking at Venice Beach, the Hollywood Bowl and Universal Studios to survive. Since those days, BROTHER evolved its trademark sound while touring extensively in the United States and in Canada, Japan, France, Egypt and Australia.
They did it all free from standard industry trends and pigeon-holes. BROTHER has self-released 12 albums, sold more CDs in the USA than any other independent Australian act and has regularly been cited as a role model within the independent scene.
BROTHER live today is a powerhouse celtic tribal trio. Tune-in!

The southern Ohio-based husband-and-wife team of multi-instrumentalists/vocalists Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, otherwise known as Over the Rhine, will be joining us live on KSUT Friday afternoon at approximately 1:30. We’ve always had an affinity for this duo – their songs, their sound, and especially their latest CD “The Long Surrender”. We’re really looking forward to having them live on KSUT and encourage you to tune-in for what’s likely to be a very cool session.
Over the Rhine, along with Mary Gauthier and Richard Shindell will perform Friday evening at the Smiley Theater in a Durango Acoustic Music production. They’re all in the area participating in “Conversations On A Musical Train: Roots on the Narrow Gauge” which includes a trip on the Durango & Silverton train.

We love The Black Lillies and we’re so happy to have them back in the area for the Four Corners Folk Festival at 12:15 on Saturday. As a bonus, they’ll be joining us live in-studio Friday morning around 11:00. Their session with us last year was one of KSUT’s best of 2010. Tune-in!

A musical force equipped with the soulful vocals of Janis and the guitar slinging skills of Stevie Ray, Carolyn Wonderland reaches into the depths of the Texas blues tradition with the wit of a poet. Wonderland’s instrumental abilities include guitar, slide guitar, mandolin, trumpet and piano. Although primarily a blues artist, Wonderland likes to incorporate elements of all styles of music into her performance. She’ll perform with her band: Cole El-Saleh on keyboards and Robert Michael Hooper on drums. Tune-in for an in-studio performance and interview Thursday at 2:15 on KSUT. She performs Thursday night at The Abbey Theater.
KSUT Public Radio has released ‘Roots & Rhythms 5’, the fifth in a series of one of a kind CD collections composed of in-studio performances. The disc features twenty songs, originally performed live on KSUT, by nationally known musicians who’ve visited the station while in the region for concerts and festivals. The Roots & Rhythms’ series serves as a memento of the area’s live music scene.
Guests include some of the best touring artists to perform locally in recent years. From the “Texican” rock trio Los Lonely Boys; to Americana singer-songwriters Jimmy LaFave and Slaid Cleaves; blues singers Janiva Magness and Eric Bibb – and Canadian fiddler and step dancer April Verch, the variety of musical genres fits the eclectic nature of KSUT’s music programming. Returning guests Eliza Gilkyson and Maura O’Connell have been included on earlier volumes of Roots & Rhythms. New emerging bands such as The Black Lillies, The Greencards, Assembly of Dust and MilkDrive provide an opportunity to introduce some fresh talent to the KSUT audience.
All songs were recorded live in the KSUT studios. Permission to use each track was sought and granted from the artists and their publishing companies, who waived royalties so all profits would benefit KSUT. Conditionally, the CD is limited-edition (2000 copies), cannot be sold at retail and is only available as a fundraising gift. Earlier volumes, Roots & Rhythms 1 through 4 are out of print.
Roots & Rhythms 5 is available with a $72 membership pledge to KSUT. The station’s Summer pledge drive takes place August 22-27, 2011. Membership can be pledged on-line @ksut.org or by phone 970-563-0255.
