Ray Parker reported on the D-Day Invasion from inside a German prisoner-of-war camp.  Then just 19, the young airman was shot down on his 12th mission in World War II and was taken to a POW camp just outside of Poland.

“The winter I spent in Stalag Luft 1 was Germany’s worst in 50 years,” writes Parker on his blog.

But the cold didn’t stop the young newspaper man from contributing to a prisoner-run underground daily paper called “POW-WOW” (Prisoners of War Waiting on Winning). He wrote for the newspaper until the day he was discovered by German guards, just a month before the war ended.

Parker recently put pen to paper again and wrote an action-packed memoir called Down in Flames.
