Holiday weekend happenings: Tinsley Ellis, Salt Fire Circus and Iron Horse block party

Alligator Records’ blues guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Tinsley Ellis performs Saturday night at the Purple Haze. Ellis sings and plays with the energy and soul of all the great Southern musicians who have come before him. Ellis attacks his music with rock power and blues feeling, following in the tradition of Deep South musical heroes Duane Allman, Freddie King, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. His live shows feature extended fretwork filled with melodic and rhythmic experimentation, in the spirit of today’s jam bands.

The Salt Fire Circus presents Twisted Fairytales at the Durango Arts Center Theatre Friday and Saturday night with shows at 6:30 and 9:30 (and again June 3-5). The Salt Fire Circus is a grass-roots, community-wide art project,  featuring performances that draw on the talent of dancers, singers, musicians, and artists from the Durango community. Their shows have received rave reviews and ticket sales are brisk.

The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic presents its fourth annual downtown concert to benefit the Mercy Regional Breast Care Center on Sunday from 12:30-6 pm.  Formula 151, Cosmic Accident (featuring KSUT’s Jim Belcher!) along with other local bands will perform throughout the day, with stages at 9th and Main, and 8th and E. Second. The Irish Embassy and Steamworks will each host beer gardens. The festivities are in conjunction with  the Iron Horse Criterium races, followed by the Durango Cyclery Cruiser Crit.
