KSUT to broadcast President Obama’s address to the nation Tuesday evening at 6:00

President Barack Obama will address the nation from the Oval Office on Tuesday, August 31 at 6 PM MST. KSUT will carry NPR’s live, anchored coverage of the address.

Obama promised in 2009 to end the formal “combat” mission by August 31; earlier this week the White House said the number of U.S. troops staged in Iraq had fallen below 50,000.  Iraq is scheduled to assume its own security after Tuesday, with the U.S. falling into an advisory and backup role.

Ricky Skaggs to chat with Kenny B today at 1:00

Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder’s performance at the Four Corners Folk Festival this weekend is much anticipated.  Tune-in today (8/30) shortly after 1:00 PM for Kenny B’s phone interview with Ricky about what the band’s been up to, and what to expect from them on Reservoir Hill on Saturday evening.

2010 marks Ricky’s 39th year as a professional musician, and this fourteen-time Grammy Award winner continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music.  Known affectionately today as bluegrass music’s official ambassador, Ricky has brought the genre to greater levels of popularity in the past few years than the father of bluegrass music, the legendary Bill Monroe, could ever have imagined.  With eight consecutive Grammy-nominated classics behind him, all from his own Skaggs Family Records label (Bluegrass Rules! in 1998, Ancient Tones in 1999, both Soldier of the Cross and Big Mon: The Songs of Bill Monroe in 2000, History of the Future in 2001, Live at the Charleston Music Hall in 2003, Brand New Strings in 2005, and Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder Instrumentals in 2007), bluegrass music is undoubtedly in good hands, with the masterful Skaggs at the helm.

Tune-in for Sam Bush’s 2010 Newport Folk Festival set today at noon!

Today at noon, we’ll be bringing you special programming, as we gear up for the 15th annual Four Corners Folk Festival this weekend. Tune-in for Sam Bush’s performance from the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I., recorded earlier this month by NPR. Eight albums into his Grammy-decorated solo career, Sam Bush has become a consistent heavy hitter in the world of bluegrass. Bush rarely travels without some of the best bluegrass players in the business: bassist Todd Parks, drummer Chris Brown, banjoist Scott Vestal and guitarist Stephen Mougin.Of course, Sam Bush is one of the headliners at this weekend’s FCFF in Pagosa Springs.  Check out the full lineup at folkwest.com.

Gretchen Peters at the Hank Friday night, live on KSUT at 1:30

“….Like Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams and the great Emmylou Harris, Gretchen Peters is a precocious talent.  The tag for her work is alternative country but with a voice as controlled and haunting as this, she could sing anything in front of her.” UK Telegraph

Peters has the sort of creative impulse that inevitably finds the fertile spots, which is a wonderful thing from the standpoints of quality and longevity, even if it can be a little unpredictable. Circus Girl: The Best of Gretchen Peters is a welcome chance, then, to retrace how her songs have grown—and keep growing—from their roots in her singular storytelling gifts. In other words, it’s a chance to take in the full effect thus far.

Gretchen joins us live on KSUT Friday at 1:30 for music and conversation. She performs at the Henry Strater Theatre this Friday (8/27). Doors at 7:30 pm, Show at 8:00 pm.
